The most common issue found with slow computers can usually be attributed to malware (viruses, trojan horses, worms, and spyware).  Please read below for a brief description of some of the threats you may face as a computer user.

  • Some viruses are benign or playful in intent and effect while some can be quite harmful, erasing data or causing your hard disk to require reformatting.
  • Spyware is any technology that aids in gathering information about a person or organization without their knowledge. On the Internet (where it is sometimes called a spybot or tracking software), spyware is programming that is put in someone's computer to secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers or other interested parties.

  • A computer worm differs from a computer virus in that a computer worm can run itself. A virus needs a host program to run, and the virus code runs as part of the host program. A computer worm can spread without a host program, although some modern computer worms also use files to hide inside.
